Travelling, Relocating, Starting a Business, Contracting, Promotions, Degree, New Industries or moving into a more specialised engineering role all begin with one thing – Risk taking.
Taking risks results in having variety, which is said to be the spice of life.
Engineering is one of the few career platforms that speaks an international language and is required globally to ensure survival and technological advancements. The need for good engineers is greater than ever which puts you in the driving seat to navigate through your career pursuing whatever financial and cultural passions you have.
Being risk-averse is easily confused with being sensible, this along with unlikely expectations, fear of failure and worry about damaging your career is what leaves people with a feeling of constraint and unfulfillment.
However, it is important to remember that when you take a zoomed out view of a 20-40 career, any ‘risky’ move that didn’t work out becomes an insignificant drop in the ocean. The worst case scenario that has valid probability is that you will experience short term discomfort and return to a similar situation to your present one but with greater appreciation. The benefits of succeeding always outweighs the worst case scenario and this cost benefit calculation is what fuels greatness.
We have marvelled at the courage and growth engineers have experienced after leaving great opportunities to pursue and achieve more. @Gregg Severn @Michael Bennett @Jens Harris @Luke Holland @Luke Pont @Will Megarry @Jordan Mapp @Andy Pynn @Matt Gibson @Connor Ogilvie @Adam Kippen to name a few I have had the pleasure of assisting.
Our point is that your career is completely customisable, you are in charge of the route you take and the destinations you pursue. The engineering recruitment market post Covid-19 will be fruitful and bursting with opportunities, there will be a bigger importance placed on making the most of your sweet precious time on planet earth. So when faced with making a life changing decision you can always feel safe in the knowledge that you can get back any lost momentum with the skills you have. Calculate risks, be smart enough to turn down the wrong ones and brave enough to say yes to the right ones. Remember that resistance always faces true north.
